Union Home to Inf, 24/02/10

The weather yet again threatened to cancel this fixture for a second time. Some hard graft to clear and mark the lines, despite the coating of snow, allowed this game to go ahead in less than perfect conditions. This was to be a battle of survival with the winners guaranteed safety in the Merit 1 League and the losers facing the prospect of a play off and the threat of relegation.

.
Early pressure belonged to the Infantry who got off to a strong start which allowed them to set up camp in the Corps half for most of the opening quarter. Despite pushing hard for the try line a solid defence forced the visitors to probe out wide only to be thrown back by some excellent cover defence from the back three of LCpl Harrison (30 Sig Regt), LCpl Dukes (3 UK Div HQ and Sig Regt) and LCpl Thompson (10 Sig Regt). The Infantry were eventually rewarded with a penalty for an infringement at the back of the scrum from an ever eager Lt Thompson (2 Sig Regt).

With the scent of blood the Infantry struck back from the kick off and stretched the Corps defence after a lovely break out wide. Quick to reorganise the second phase saw some beautiful handling and a well deserved try for the visitors. With a good conversion the Corps looked set for yet another afternoon of woe. Some impressive running from the Corps allowed the home side to force its way into the infantry half before seeing a repeat of the opening score following an Infantry infringement from the back of a scrum. LCpl Young (21 Sig Regt) duly opened the Corps account for the afternoon. A strong counter attack from the kick off set the Corps up nicely inside the Infantry 22. A quick tap and go following another infringement at the set piece allowed the Corps to strike out wide for LCpl Dukes to glide over. LCpl Young then decided to give the supporters a short shock as he bounced the ball off of the post and over the crossbar to level the scores.

.
Never a side to take the easy way out, the Corps then set about letting the Infantry straight back into the game. Some strong running and good angles from the visitors was met with a couple of missed tackles which allowed the Infantry through for a soft unconverted try. The Corps then allowed a further try before half time following a simple catch and drive from a close range line out.

Early pressure in the second half saw the Corps probe deep into the Infantry half. A clean catch and drive from Sig Dan Leigh (30 Sig Regt) saw the Corps drive towards the visitors line with Cpl Bates, fresh from action the previous evening with the Army XV, breach the Infantry line. Further pressure allowed LCpl Young to add to the tally and put the Corps within a kick of victory. Continued pressure saw the Corps camped in the Infantry 22 and an infringement with 10 minutes to go looked set to give the Corps the lead for the first time in the game. The kick from out wide was agonisingly close but drifted wide offering the Infantry a life line to which they then clung resolutely. Showing great composure, the Corps continued their onslaught and were awarded a penalty a few minutes later which LCpl Young slipped neatly through the uprights to give the Corps a single point lead.
.

.
With enough time remaining for further excitement the Infantry pressed hard for the Corps line. Whilst the defence held until the very last a penalty was eventually awarded out wide and the Infantry looked set to sneak a victory at the last. Fortunately for the Corps the kick drifted wide and short and was promptly drilled towards the touch line to win the match and seal a vital, nail-biting victory.
